On January 12, 2018, the Maryland General Assembly overrode Governor Hogan’s veto of 2017’s mandatory paid leave law, House Bill 1. Therefore, Maryland employers are now required to provide paid leave to employees. On February 11, 2018, the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act is scheduled to go into effect.
(February 15, 2018 — ANNAPOLIS, Md.)– On Tuesday, the house took up SB 304. Today, the Economic Matters Committee voted, 12-11, unfavorably. This means the bill to delay the effective date on 2017’s HB 1 is now dead. HB 1 went into effect on Sunday. Employers are now legally required to comply. The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation has released early guidance.
