Two major hospital operators, Ascension and St. Joseph, may potentially merge to make the largest hospital owner in the United States. Ascension Living already has 10,000 residents in 11 states, and St. Joseph has eight affiliated brands with 90 non-acute services and 12 supportive housing units. St. Agnes hospital in Baltimore and St. Joseph’s Place in Emmitsburg are members of Ascension Health as well. Although nothing is currently set in stone, this deal would form an operation with 191 hospitals in 27 states and annual revenue of $44.8 billion. Currently HCA Healthcare Inc., is the nation’s largest hospital operator which owns 177 hospitals and has $41.5 billion in revenue for the 2016 fiscal year.
